Ben Spies goes into the 2012 MotoGP World Championship season with high expectations. He expects to be a title contender.

And that can mean only one thing: racing for wins against early title favorites, his Yamaha teammate, Jorge Lorenzo, and Honda's defending champion Casey Stoner.

Spies gets his first chance in the new era of 1000cc MotoGP in this Sunday's season opening Qatar Grand Prix in Doha.

With ten wins last season and a string of fast preseason times Stoner, in the eyes of his peers, is the benchmark racer.

But Spies is boosted by his own form in testing and the switch to 1000cc, the extra power, torque, and late-race tire wear suiting his style and Superbike background.

The 27-year-old Texan is confident he can add to his single MotoGP victory, which he claimed last year at the Dutch TT and be a title threat.

Potentially a four-way battle looms. Stoner and Lorenzo are the clear choices but closely shadowed by Dani Pedrosa, the speedy Spaniard who is factory teammate to Stoner at Honda, plus Spies.

"I've got no excuses. If I don't do it then I'm not doing my job, and if I do then that's what I am here to do," Spies said. "But the reality is it means racing up front with Casey and Jorge.

"I know we have the bike to do it so we just have to put it all together and be consistent. But I feel really good on the 1000cc M1.

"I do have high expectations for the season. I've won races and got podiums but not as many as I would like. I need to be in that podium battle every week and fight for wins a lot more often."
