When Ben Spies stopped and thought about what he really wanted out of bike racing he decided that the MotoGP World Championship was where he needed to be. And winning the premier class world title remains unfinished business.

Spies wants "no regrets" which is why he has decided that he should continue to test his talent in MotoGP.

For 2103, that will be with the Pramac Ducati 'junior team,' having earlier walked away from his job with the factory Yamaha squad and briefly considered opportunities with Gresini Honda or a return to World Superbikes.

The reset in his thinking came in the weeks following his declaration at the Indianapolis GP that WSBK was where he would race in 2013 and would provide a less stressful life than MotoGP.

A deal with BMW beckoned but that's when it appears Spies realized that he had been there and done that, taking the World Superbike world title in his first attempt with Yamaha in 2009.

"I've been in World Superbikes, and while you never know what you can do if you go back, I've been there and have done it, won races and a title," Spies said. "But in MotoGP I know I haven't got the most out of what I can do.

"That is what I had to think a lot about it, and I don't want regrets in five years knowing that I left something out and didn't reach my full potential."

The path Spies has chosen to achieve his potential in MotoGP has had its twists and turns. And more will follow.

After his sudden resignation from the factory Yamaha team, a place where Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi have demonstrated championships can be won, Spies will face a 2013 season of creating a platform for future factory offers.

Only with a factory team can Spies hope to achieve his full potential. The Pramac Ducati satellite deal is a holding pattern.
