Casey Stoner's hopes of closing his MotoGP on top were provided with a huge boost in Saturday's Dutch TT. The Aussie fully capitalized on title rival Jorge Lorenzo's misfortune by storming to victory and promptly reducing the Spaniard's championship lead to nil.

Stoner got away in second behind Repsol Honda teammate Dani Pedorsa while Yamaha ace Lorenzo was third -- and precisely the wrong place it turns out. San Carlo Honda Gresini's Alvaro Bautista made an overly-optimistic lunge up the inside of the race's first corner and lost control, collecting the helpless Lorenzo out with him.

Reigning champ Stoner patiently tracked behind Pedrosa, sitting on his rear wheel before finally striking with eight to go and powering away at that point to claim the Assen win.

Pedrosa had no answer for Stoner's late-race speed but was able to continue on to secure a clear runner-up finish to hand Repsol Honda a 1-2 result.

'11 Assen winner Ben Spies pushed the HRC pilots early before falling back into an intense battle for the final podium position with Monster Yamaha Tech3's Andrea Dovizioso, who has been actively campaigning for the Texan's spot in the official squad.

The Italian got the better of the American on this day, making his move on the final lap to pick up his second podium of '12.

Dovi's teammate, Cal Crutchlow, rebounded from a disastrous opening lap in which he was shuffled back to 13th position. Slicing his way forward, Crutchlow worked hard to make his way through an all-Ducati fight for fifth featuring Valentino Rossi, Nicky Hayden, and Hector Barbera.

Once clear, the Briton carried on to fifth.

Hayden ultimately won the Ducati fight, recovering from a couple forays off course to claim the checkered flag in sixth ahead of Pramac man Barbera.

Rossi dropped off the hunt and was ultimately forced into the pits to change a shagged rear Bridgestone.

Stefan Bradl, who impressed by qualifying fourth, ran in that position early but crashed out early.

Team Aspar's Randy de Puniet was the top CRT entry on the day in right, with Michele Pirro and Mattia Pasini completing the top ten.

Stoner and Lorenzo are now equal atop the 2012 MotoGP World Championship order on 140 points apiece (with Lorenzo currently holding the tiebreaker with four wins to Stoner's three).
