MOTOGP: Stoner Claims Pole, Demoralizes Opposition

For the fifth consecutive race Casey Stoner will start his red Ducati GP8 from pole position after a blistering qualifying performance ahead of tomorrow's U.S. Grand Prix at Laguna Seca.

Stoner has stunned his rivals with two days of dominance in practice and qualifying and the young Australian looks set to repeat his race winning performance of a year ago.

No one is prepared to bet against Stoner in the 32-lap race after he lowered his own qualifying record by an amazing 1.5s -- not even his main championship rival Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) nor Laguna legend Nicky Hayden (Honda), who will start alongside Stoner on the front row.

Asked what he could to win Rossi only half-joked, "Start the race 30 seconds before Stoner!"

Stoner is at home on the
tricky Laguna layout and is in spectacular form, daring to ride his Ducati to the limit on the roller coaster track. Stoner finished qualifying with 0.4s gap to Rossi, delivering a Bridgestone 1-2 on the grid.

But the sobering statistic is that Stoner's best lap on a race tire -- a 1'21.3 -- would have put him second on the grid, ahead of Hayden's fastest time on a Michelin qualifying tire.

The problems for Hayden, who is bidding to repeat his 2005/06 success in his home race, are even deeper with all Michelin riders frustrated by a lack of performance from their race tire allocation.

Texan Colin Edwards (Tech3 Yamaha), who qualified seventh, was also critical of the Michelin tire options at a track where a year ago the French rubber was also uncompetitive.
