Casey Stoner overcame a late push from Jorge Lorenzo to register his first-ever win at Jerez in today's Spanish Grand Prix.

Casey Stoner summoned up an inspired final two laps to prevent a Qatar repeat on his way to winning the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez.

Repsol Honda man Stoner maneuvered forward and broke free from an early tight scrap for the lead as the race took shape. The reigning champ pulled his Yamaha Factory Racing rival, Jorge Lorenzo, with him as the escaped from the pack.

Stoner opened up an advantage of around Lorenzo at mid-distance and threatened to make it a one-sided affair, but just as he did in the opener, Lorenzo clawed his way back to Stoner in the race's late stages and challenged for victory.

Unlike Round 1, however, Stoner had an answer this time around, putting his head down on the penultimate and final lap to eek open just enough space to successfully defend his position and beat the Spaniard on his home turf.

Despite completely different conditions -- the opener was held in the dry desert under the lights and today's GP was held in the day following a day of rain in Spain (the track was mostly dry but damp spots could still be seen) -- the same players shined and struggled.

Stoner's teammate, Dani Pedrosa, again finished on the podium in third, winning out in a hard-fought battle with the on-form Cal Crutchlow on the Monster Yamaha Tech3 machine as the two closed on the leaders late.

Crutchlow teammate, Andrea Dovizioso again confirmed the competitiveness of the M1 to again complete the top five.

Gresini Honda's Alvaro Bautista finished sixth ahead of LCR Honda's promising rookie, Stefan Bradl.

Ducati Team's Nicky Hayden showed a lot of fight early, battling for third before ultimately settling in down in eighth but still ahead of his teammate, nine-time champ Valentino Rossi, who finished ninth.

Rossi wasn't the only big name to struggle (again), as Ben Spies repeated his Qatar nightmare, fading down through the order throughout the race to again finish a discouraging 11th behind Pramac Ducati's Hector Barbera.

The victory is Stoner's first at Jerez but the defending champ still trails '10 champion Lorenzo in the points standings 45-41 on the strength of the Spaniard's 1-2 vs. the Aussie's 3-1. Pedrosa is third at 36 followed by Crutchlow and Dovizioso at 26 and 22 respectively.

The stars of the MotoGP World Championship will be back in action next weekend as the series heads to Estoril for the Grand Prix of Portugal.
