PROGRAMMING NOTE: The 2012 MotoGP season opener from Doha, Qatar will air on SPEED on Sunday, April 8 at 3:00pm ET. #SPEEDmoto
Casey Stoner likes the look of the #1 plate on his spanking new 1000cc Repsol Honda RC213V. And if the 26-year-old Australian has his way then the #1 will still be there at the end of the 18-race campaign, which opens under the lights at Losail with the Qatar Grand Prix this Sunday.
Stoner has reset to zero as he contemplates the 2012 campaign and the prospect of going back-to-back with Honda following his domination of last year's MotoGP World Championship.
The Australian won 10 races in 2011 to claim the title from 2010 winner Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) who again looms as Stoner's main title threat.
Judging from preseason testing, the increase from 800cc to 1000cc (along with the addition of the CRTs) has done precious little to upset the balance of power; Stoner has been fast and seemingly nerveless in testing and has owned the front-running pace.
While he admits it would be 'fantastic' to win back-to-back titles Stoner is, as always, retreating to his simple racing mantra.
Win races and the championship will take care of itself.
"I am still the hunter," Stoner said.
"I've got to go out and try and take the championship again. This year is a completely clean slate and I'm going out to try and take that #1 again.
"Everybody says there is huge pressure being World Champion but I find it a lot less. Once you have won a couple of championships you can just go for it when you race. No matter what happens this season I won't have the same level of pressure, and I won't have to put the same pressure on myself to try and do it again for a third time.
"While I don't think it will prove anything, it would be fantastic to win back-to-back titles and keep the #1 plate.
