MOTOGP: Stoner Tutors Hayden In Barcelona Master Class

There was a Ducati master class during the Barcelona test following last week's Catalunya Grand Prix. The test was the first since the season began and a rare opportunity for additional track time in advance of the next race, the Dutch TT, which will run this Saturday (27 June) at Assen.

Leading the way was Ducati's fast man Casey Stoner who had his factory teammate Nicky Hayden in his slipstream for five laps. And then Stoner pulled back to allow Hayden ahead for a couple of laps with the brilliant Australian observing the Kentucky Kid from behind.

At the Barcelona test Hayden was the only of 15 riders who did not go faster than his best race time in the Catalunya GP.

The positive steps taken in practice for the Barcelona race -- raising and moving Hayden's seat position forward plus revised engine mapping -- had still not translated into a pace that Hayden was comfortable with.

Even though Hayden missed his race time by just 0.1s
at the test it only added to the paddock theories as to why only Stoner is consistently super-fast on the red bike.

Still suffering muscle soreness and pain from his race day virus Stoner was 1.39s faster than Hayden who complained of a "flat engine" in his bike during his tag team run with Stoner.

“Casey gets the bike turned better than me and accelerates earlier," Hayden said as he reflected on his Ducati tutorial. “He said the biggest area was off the corners. Casey said he was making up a lot of time on me off the corners and I think we went somewhere wrong with some electronics and we maybe had too much.

"He said he was about to run over the top of me coming onto the some of the straights. My engines felt a little flat and it seems strange that I was slower (than the race). There are so many electronic and mapping strategies, something can go wrong, but my acceleration was a little off compared to the race."
