Dani Pedrosa feared he may have suffered a broken foot in a freak accident during the opening practice session for Sunday's Czech Grand Prix at Brno.

Pedrosa, now alone carrying the hopes of the factory Repsol Honda team in Casey Stoner's injury absence, was hit by two flying rocks at high speed.

The loose rocks were flicked by Valentino Rossi's Ducati GP12 which ran a little wide exiting the final corner, running across the curb onto the ungrassed edge of the tarmac surface.

"This morning I was behind Valentino and he went a little bit to the outside and he threw me two big rocks," Pedrosa said. "One hit the front of the bike on the screen and broke everything on the front and also a little part on my helmet.

"The other one hit my foot and it was a pretty strong hit. The rocks were quite big and I thought at the beginning that I had something broken, but later I could see the pain was going down and this is normally a good sign.

"I have some pain in my foot on the top."

Pedrosa was under full acceleration, perhaps touching 100 mph, when he felt the stinging impact of the rock which flicked his foot off the footpeg.

"It was like the rock had been shot out of a gun," he said. "It was super strong and it was like a rocket. I could see it coming but I was too close and I couldn’t do anything to avoid it.”

Forced to complete the lap before entering the pits Pedrosa limped from his bike to rest while the session was red flagged so course workers could sweep away the offending rocks and gravel.

Pedrosa was relieved when the swelling and pain reduced for the afternoon practice and he finished with the fastest time, just 0.05s ahead of Yamaha rival Jorge Lorenzo.

Rossi later expressed his concern for Pedrosa and said it was an innocent mistake to run "slightly wide" on the exit and that he "did not do it on purpose."

"I hope Dani is okay," Rossi said.
