• Dani Pedrosa starts from pole for the first time since the San Marino GP. Pedrosa’s qualifying time is the fastest-ever lap of the Valencia circuit by a motorcycle, breaking the previous record set in qualifying by Valentino Rossi in 2006.

• Jorge Lorenzo is on the front row for the tenth successive race. If he finishes the race in the top three he will set a new record of 17 podium finishes in the premier-class of Grand Prix racing in one season.

• Casey Stoner starts from the final place on the front row. Stoner is aiming to become the first full-time GP rider to retire with a victory since Kenny Roberts in 1983.

• If Stoner wins the race it will be only the second time in history that the top three riders in the premier-class world championship have finished on the same number of wins. The other occasion was in 1952 when Umberto Masetti, Les Graham and Reg Armstrong all won two races in the season.

• Cal Crutchlow heads the second row of the grid, and after his third place finish at Phillip Island he will be aiming to become the first British rider since Ron Haslam in 1987 to score back-to-back podium finishes in the premier-class of GP racing.

• In fifth place on the grid is Stefan Bradl, who has not reached the finish in any of his five previous GP starts in Valencia.

• Andrea Dovizioso, in the final place on the second row, has already had 12 top-four finishes this year.

• Nicky Hayden is the top Ducati rider on the grid in seventh place, which is his best qualifying result since the Italian GP at Mugello.

• Alvaro Bautista has qualified in the middle of the third row of the grid. Bautista has finished in the top-six at the last seven races.

• In ninth place on the grid is Hector Barbera, who has won in Valencia in both the 125cc and 250cc GP classes.

• The top CRT rider in qualifying for the seventh time this year, Aleix Espargaro is in 10th place on the grid.

• Valentino Rossi, in his final race on the Ducati, has qualified in 11th place on the grid.
