Honda is close to extending Dani Pedrosa's factory contract into an eighth season in 2013 and are hoping to confirm the deal before next week's Italian GP at Mugello. The official announcement could even come as early as this weekend's German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring.

The move by the HRC factory team, sponsored by Spanish oil giant Repsol, ends the unfounded rumors that Valentino Rossi would make a return to Honda.

With the rookie rule abolished it is now apparent that Honda's two-man factory team is shaping up as Pedrosa and Spanish young gun Marc Marquez.

For some weeks now HRC vice-president Shuhei Nakamoto has insisted that it was "impossible" for Rossi to return to the factory team but that he would have no objection to Rossi being on a satellite team Honda. Nakamoto also confirmed to SPEED that he has had no contact with Rossi about rejoining Honda.

“My feeling is very positive and we have already agreed many of the main points," Nakamoto said of the Pedrosa deal. "I hope we will be able to announce his signing by Mugello unless Ducati or Yamaha make a crazy offer!"

Pedrosa also agreed the deal was close during opening day practice at the Sachsenring.

"I can't say anything yet but in the next days you will have some news," Pedrosa said.

This year is Pedrosa's seventh with the HRC factory team and he has yet to deliver a world title, something that Casey Stoner did in his first year with Repsol Honda in 2011.
