Colin Edwards could be making his final MotoGP appearance on American soil in Sunday's Indianapolis Grand Prix.
The future of the Texan, who has a legion of fans, is likely to become clearer in a series of talks at the Brickyard this weekend and in the following weeks.
While he is hugely admired by Tech3 Yamaha team boss Herve Poncharal, there is a feeling within Yamaha that it is time for Edwards, 37, to consider his future.
The collaboration between Tech3 and the Yamaha factory is tight based on a view that Tech3's role is to develop young riders for the future.
Both Eugene Laverty, 25, and German young gun Stefan Bradl, 22, are two emerging stars who are under consideration by Tech3 and Yamaha for 2012. As is Edwards.
With an eye on the future Yamaha MotoGP boss Lin Jarvis refers to the successful transition made by 2009 World Superbike Champion Ben Spies from Tech3 to the factory MotoGP team.
"With Tech3 it is Herve's choice to nominate a rider and that team is the place where we would like to see potential candidates for the future, like with Ben Spies," Jarvis said.
"I'm sure that Herve will agree that bringing on young talent is the main mission of his team although for Herve it is his also business and he has to be mindful of that.
"Looking at the candidates then Stefan Bradl is as good as you get right now, and Marc Marquez is very good also but it seems he is strongly linked to Repsol Honda."
