Solis Sweeps Red Bull Rookies Doubleheader

Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup title leader Benny Solis added a bit of padding to his championship advantage by securing his fourth win of the season this afternoon at Laguna Seca.

While not quite as close as Saturday's magical finish, the Sunday race was action-packed as well with a three-rider scrap taking place right up until the checkered flag dropped.

After escaping from early leader Tomas Puerta, Solis, chief rival Leandro Mercado, and Hayden Gillim waged a three-man slugfest for control of the race, with each rider taking turns out front and holding clear advantages in differing areas on the track.

In the final few laps Solis found his way to the front and managed to eek out a small gap as Gillim and Mercado struggled over the runner-up spot. A late run into a pair of lappers threatened Solis' hard-earned advantage but he skillfully negotiated the slower riders and held on for a 0.927-second
margin of victory.

Afterwards Solis dedicated the race to his sister who has a birthday coming up soon.

"I got an okay start and was up in the front but then Hayden got by me and then Leandro," he stated. "I studied them for a couple laps and got by them but then I got a bad drive and they both drafted me going up the hill. I put my head down and followed them a little more and waited until three or four laps from the end. Finally I got by them and put my head down and didn't look back."

Commenting on racing in front of the massive Laguna Seca crowd and sharing the paddock with the MotoGP superstars, Solis said, "Everything was pretty fun. Usually the AMA races are real exciting but even just to come out and watch the MotoGP guys makes it even better. You're passing by down the straight and you see all of their booths and the colors and you just get even more excited and more motivated."
