REACTION TO ANNOUNCEMENT OF 25 NOMINEES TO 2013 NASCAR HALL OF FAME CLASS

NASCAR on Wednesday revealed the next 25 nominees to the 2013 NASCAR Hall of Fame class on NASCAR Race Hub. New to the nominee list this year are Ray Fox, Anne B. France, Wendell Scott, Ralph Seagraves and Rusty Wallace.

Below, SPEED on-air personalities offer their perspective on some of the 25 who made the list and those who didn’t.

“I suggested R.J. Reynolds' Ralph Seagraves for the very first class of Hall of Fame inductees because I believe RJR signing on as title sponsor of the Winston Cup Series was the single most significant economic event in NASCAR history. Seagraves was singlehandedly responsible for that sponsorship, which legitimized stock car racing as an advertising and promotional vehicle and in turn attracted the big league TV coverage and Fortune 500 sponsors which are the lifeblood of the sport today.”

“I think this list speaks to the great history of the sport as many of these names were early contributors to NASCAR. They were truly those who laid the foundation for what we see on the track today. The other item that jumps out at me about the list is versatility. This group covers every corner of the sport. I think as the years go on, the selection committee will have a more and more difficult time figuring out who should be voted in.”

“I think there is a place in the Hall of Fame for people who weren’t necessarily owners, drivers or series diplomats. I think Ken Squier, the dean of motor sports broadcasting, should have been nominated. Squier helped bring NASCAR the notoriety it got in 1979 with the infamous Daytona 500 fight between the Allison brothers and Cale Yarborough. In large part, NASCAR is what it is today because of that day and Squier’s voice is synonymous with not only the Daytona 500 but with NASCAR broadcasting throughout the years. For that, Squier should be considered for the Hall of Fame.

“I think it’s really cool to see Ralph Seagraves and Rusty Wallace on the list. I grew up watching Rusty and think he should be included for consideration because he is the epitome of a short-track racer. He came from the bullrings of the Midwest and conquered NASCAR and won the championship.”
