AMA DSB: Herrin Signs Off In Style
Future Yamaha Superbike pilot Josh Herrin closed his decorated Daytona SportBike career with one final hard-fought victory.

With the AMA Pro Daytona SportBike title already decided in Danny Eslick's favor on Saturday, Sunday's season finale was just one final opportunity for a classic category brawl to close out the year in fine style.
And the class proved up to the challenge yet again, as five and four-rider packs waged war to claim the final victory of '11.
The usual suspects -- Josh Herrin, Tommy Aquino, Cameron Beaubier, Dane Westby, and Eslick -- escaped at the front from the start. Monster Energy Graves Yamaha man Herrin largely controlled the pace, showing the trump card on the exit of the final corner, while M4 Suzuki ace Westby had the measure of the field on the brakes, which he used to good effect.
The leading pack's battle came to a momentary halt when a red flag was issued with 10 to go following a Santiago Villa crash. However, it resumed largely intact, minus only a fading '11 champ, as Herrin, Aquino, Westby, and Beaubier settled in for a final dash to the checkered flag.
Following the advice of defending Superbike champ Josh Hayes, Herrin attempted to race off into the distance and made some progress towards those ends, but his advantage was sliced from over a half second back to nothing with three laps to go.
Westby made his move on the final lap from second but was rebuffed by a determined Herrin, who refused to relent in his final race aboard a Yamaha R6 following six years on the middleweight machine with a Superbike ride on the cards for 2012.
Herrin closed out his SportBike career by claiming his fifth victory of the season, most of any rider in the class. Westby rebounded from yesterday's disappointment by finishing second, while breakthrough Saturday winner Aquino finished third.
