Josh Hayes took a huge step towards attaining a second consecutive AMA Pro Superbike title with a brilliant Saturday victory at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

The Monster Energy Graves Yamaha superstar dropped in line behind a resurgent Ben Bostrom off the stripe and through the opening lap but slammed in front of the Californian while opening the race's second lap and was never headed.

It wasn't easy, however, as Bostrom proved surprisingly stubborn, not only keeping the reigning champ honest, but providing him with a real threat until the Mississippian finally broke his challenge on lap 21 of 23.

No other rider was even close to having the measure of Hayes' clutch pace, as the leading duo dropped the rest of the field -- (former) title leader Blake Young included -- more than 15 seconds behind their chase for the checkered flag.

Hayes notched up his third win of the year just over two seconds ahead of former World Superbike hero Bostrom.

With Hayes and Bostrom immediately clearing off into the distance, the race quickly became one of damage control for Young, who qualified in seventh place earlier in the day.

That plan started off on the right foot as the Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki pilot leapt up from the second row to slot into third at the start, but he soon became embroiled in a race-long scrap with fellow Suzuki runners Tommy Hayden and Roger Hayden.

And teammate Tommy and National Guard Jordan Suzuki man Roger didn't do Young's championship hopes any favors, shuffling him back to a narrow fifth at the stripe.
