Two years in and still no man other than Josh Hayes has won an AMA Pro American Superbike race at New Jersey Motorsports Park.
Hayes' fourth victory at the circuit came following yet another epic showdown with title rival Tommy Hayden as the two escaped from the Superbike pack and waged a dogfight for supremacy all by themselves, mirroring the season as a whole.
And perhaps in what will also prove to be a microcosm of the 2010 title campaign, while the Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki pilot put forth a valiant effort, there was simply no stopping the Graves Yamaha ace in the end.
Hayden and Hayes traded the lead multiple times over the final handful of laps, with the Kentuckian twice attempting to outbrake the Mississippian on the final lap, only to see his nemesis immediately charge right back through into first.
Hayes ultimately powered over the stripe with a 0.324-second margin of victory to collect his seventh victory of the season, ripping away Hayden's control of his own championship destiny in the process.
The two were joined on the podium by former MotoGP superstar John Hopkins. Hopkins battled his way back from well down the order and ultimately overcame Hayden's teammate, Blake Young, on the final lap to register a first-career AMA Superbike podium result.
Jordan Suzuki's Brett McCormick made up for yesterday's blunder with an impressive fifth place ahead of his National Guard-backed teammate, Jake Zemke, who ran as high as second in the race's early stages. Meanwhile, Geoff May piloted the Erik Buell Racing entry home in seventh position.
RidersDiscount.com Suzuki's Taylor Knapp narrowly beat a very sore Chris Ulrich to the checkered flag in eighth as Shane Narbonne rounded out the top ten in what was a strong day for the Celtic Racing squad.
Pat Clark Motorsports' Ben Bostrom suffered an odd crash early, bringing out a red flag. Foremost Insurance Ducati's Larry Pegram then retired following the opening lap of the restart.
Hayes now leads Hayden 426-404 to establish a relatively commanding title advantage heading into the 2010 AMA Pro American Superbike finale at Barber Motorsports Park on September 24-26.
