The odds were stacked against Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey coming into the Lites Western Region Series finale in Seattle, Washington’s Qwest Field. He trailed points leader Jason Lawrence of the Boost Mobile/Yamaha of Troy team by six points, which meant unlike the two riders in the running for the championship back east a week earlier in St. Louis, Dungey didn’t control his own destiny. All he could do is win the race, but then he had to hope that Lawrence finished off of the podium as well.

When the gate dropped to start the Lites main, it was Brawndo Honda’s Bobby Kiniry with the holeshot, and Dungey quickly made good on his part of the deal, grabbing the lead right away and pulling away. Unfortunately for Dungey, Lawrence started inside the top five and quickly began to pass his way through the leaders.

Within the first few laps, Lawrence fought his way into second, and the rest of the main event was largely processional. While Dungey hung on to win the main event, Lawrence grabbed second and, more importantly, won the war -- the 2008 Lites Western Regional Supercross Championship.

“It’s
disappointing, but I could only do what I could do,” Dungey said after the race. “I feel like I learned a lot this year, and I know my speed was never the problem, but I just needed to calm down and let the races come to me -- not try to make up all of the time in one lap. Next year will be different.”

The 450cc main event was expected to be rather boring but ended up being a bit of a doozy. Although he posted the fastest lap time in practice, points leader Chad Reed of the San Manuel Yamaha team was still a question mark in regards to the durability of his injured shoulder. In the first turn, the worst scenario possible reared its head.

Although Andrew Short got the holeshot, Kevin Windham quickly took over the lead while Reed fell in a first-turn pileup. With Windham out front and pulling away and Reed playing catch-up from behind, the stage was set for a large points change at the top of the championship race. However, only a few laps in, Windham found himself parked in the middle of the track removing a track banner from his rear wheel. He got going again well outside the top five, although still ahead of Reed.
