MOTOGP: Pedrosa Untouchable at Home

Dani Pedrosa sparked his world championship hopes with an untouchable performance to win his home race at the Circuit Catalunya today. Welcomed to the podium by 113,000 fans, Pedrosa was all smiles after his flag-to-flag victory, his second of the season, over 25 laps on a warm afternoon.

Pedrosa has closed to just seven points behind world championship leader Valentino Rossi who finished second after a tense late-race skirmish with Ducati rival Casey Stoner.

Rossi leads with 142 points with Pedrosa on 135 while Stoner is now 50 points behind in fourth place on 92 points. Still third is Spanish rookie Jorge Lorenzo (92) who did not race today as he recovers from concussion suffered in a heavy tumble during practice on Friday.

But this race was all about a near-perfect Pedrosa who blasted from the front row to lead Stoner into turn one and
control the race with relentless pace.

He posted a new lap record on lap four on the way opening a massive seven-second margin over Rossi by lap ten.

"This is a fantastic feeling in front of my fans," Pedrosa said. "My team made a set-up change just before the race which worked very well, the balance was better after we had some problems in practice.

"I was alone and pushing to be faster and it was difficult to keep the rhythm; I could see everyone cheering for me."

Just half a second separated Rossi and Stoner at the finish with young Italian rookie Andrea Dovizioso finishing fourth, equaling his previous best result at the opening race in Qatar.

Dovizioso was well clear of hard-riding Texan Colin Edwards who was a strong fifth, now building his currency in the rider market as he seeks a new contract for 2009.
