PROGRAMMING NOTE: Round 5 of the Monster Energy Supercross Lites West Championship from Anaheim, CA will air on SPEED Sunday, February 5 at 1:00pm ET. #SXonSPEED
Are we going to see our first repeat winner of the 2012 season tonight in Anaheim? Or will someone outside the 'Big Four' serve up a surprise and make history by becoming the fifth winner in five races to start the season?
The first practice sessions have wrapped up and riders are currently getting their final sessions out on the track before the night show begins.
There was a lot of criticism following the opening race in Anaheim of the track’s unconventional layout. However, this weekend's track inside Angel Stadium is more in line with what the riders are accustomed to and lap times in the 57-second range. There is a very tricky whoops section that could prove to be a make-or-break part of the track, and there also happen to be a number of rhythm sections with various racing lines. A flat, 90-degree sand turn should prove interesting, as could the flat 180-degree turn off the start straight that appears to be a bit slippery.
Obviously, all eyes are on the premier class' four former champions (who also happen to be the four race winners this season) – Ryan Dungey, Chad Reed, Ryan Villopoto, and James Stewart. All four were quick, as expected, in the opening practice with Stewart on top. He was the only rider to dip into the 56-second bracket in the opening session, but after a little track maintenance, times are already picking up. As always, a good start will play a crucial role tonight, but it’d also be worth keeping an eye on the whoops as these four riders can get through them better than anyone.
Stewart looks super smooth and he’s got to be feeling really good after last weekend's breakthrough triumph. However, Stewart's rivals are all too aware of the importance of stalling his momentum before it really picks up steam, so expect them to be borderline desperate to stop him tonight. Villopoto won in Anaheim a month ago, and did so easily -- to date the most dominant outing of the season.
