Justin Barcia justified all the preseason hype by marching away to his maiden premier class Monster Energy Supercross victory Saturday night in Phoenix.
The Team Honda Muscle Milk rookie showed himself to be the fastest man throughout the evening. And once he rocketed out of the gates and stormed into the holeshot in the Main Event, the only rider capable of stopping him on this night was Barcia himself.
However, 'Bam Bam' handled the pressure effortlessly, leaping out to a big advantage early and holding strong. He ultimately soared to the checkered flag with several seconds in hand to become the 56th winner in Monster Energy Supercross history.
Afterward, Barcia said, "I came in here really strong. The track was really difficult today, but my Muscle Milk Honda was awesome. I'm just really pumped on this race and racing with the 450 guys and having a really good time."
The emerging star's triumph also marked the second straight week in which none of the 'Big Four' stood atop the podium, although the upstart's efforts may have cemented the growing trend referencing the sport's 'Big Five.'
Reigning double champ Ryan Villopoto's rebound ride following a disastrous season opener didn't exactly go to plan. However, in the end, the Monster Energy Kawasaki pilot salvaged a strong result from what could have easily resulted in further disappointment.
After spening time in the dirt at A1, Villopoto crashed again in Phoenix, this time while running fourth and chasing TwoTwo Motorsports' Chad Reed in the race's opening stages. He remounted and regrouped in ninth -- one spot behind mending rival James Stewart on the Yoshimura Suzuki -- but managed to mount a stirring charge throughout the remainder of the contest.
