SX: Catching Up With Jake Weimer
As intriguing as the 2011 Monster Energy Supercross series has been, it has been lacking another potential race winner in Jake Weimer. But that may soon change.

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer was ready for his 450cc debut in 2011. At the test tracks, he was usually on pace with the guy who is leading the championship right now, teammate Ryan Villopoto. But about 10 days before Anaheim 1, Weimer had a miscue while practicing on Villopoto’s track and went down, badly breaking his left arm. He had surgery to repair it that day, and now that it’s been a few months, the 2010 Lites West SX champ is back riding. We caught up with him recently to find out how things have been going.

Monster Energy: We hear that you started riding...

Jake Weimer:
Yup!

How has it been going?

(Dry humor) Good.

Wow, such a good answer. You’re a great interview. This is what I love about you: It’s so easy to drag interesting answers out of you... But seriously, how do you feel?

I feel like... I don’t feel like it’s been 10 weeks since I’ve ridden, so that’s good, but having said that, I’m not out there trying to match the times I was doing before I got hurt or anything like that. As of right now, it’s just kind of about putting laps in and maybe cruising around at 85-90%. But I don’t really want to push any harder than that just because it has been 10 weeks since I’ve ridden and the most important thing right now is just getting time on the bike and getting everything back. But I do feel comfortable. I feel good on the bike.

Does your arm feel good?

The arm is good. It definitely gets a little bit sore, but I think that’s a little bit to be expected. So, I think that’ll get better. As of right now, everything’s good. I feel good on the bike; I feel comfortable. I think it... I’m hoping it will continue to progress and go quickly and I’ll get up to speed.

What did you think about the racing tonight in Jacksonville?

I mean, I don’t really know what to say because it’s just so crazy. I guess racing is brutal. I guess that’s what I’ll say. Everything can be going just so sweet and then all of a sudden it’s just rock bottom and it’s just... You know, I guess that’s how it goes and you have to deal with it. And, you know, when it happens to you, you’re so devastated, but then seeing it happen, I guess... I don’t want to say it’s a good thing, but at least, you know, you see it happens to everybody. You pick up and move on past it. I do think that the first turns could be better, though. I mean, I don’t know what’s wrong with a big, sweeping 180. I mean, there’s a way to figure that out every time, right?
