PROGRAMMING NOTE: The 2012 Monster Energy Supercross season opener from Anaheim, CA will air LIVE on SPEED Saturday, January 7th at 10:00pm ET.

With the 2012 AMA Supercross season literally just days away, it's time to throw down some championship predictions.

Coming off the most competitive season in the sport's history one year ago, 2012 has the potential for even more greatness with four former champions set to battle it out, not to mention the deepest field of talent the sport has ever seen. I fully expect this season to somehow, some way exceed what we witnessed in 2011.

Which riders will finish as season's top five come Las Vegas in May?

#5 Justin Brayton

This was easily the toughest spot in the top five to nominate and I'll admit to going out on a bit of a limb here, but all the pieces are in place for Brayton to enjoy a breakout season in 2012.

Since making the move into the premier class, Iowan Brayton has made progressive moves forward each year. His two years learning from one of the most respected organizations in all of motorsports in Joe Gibbs Racing should prove invaluable in furthering that upward trend.

For 2012, Brayton has the opportunity of a lifetime with American Honda. While he has yet to set the world on fire in Supercross, he did manage to grab multiple heat race wins last season and demonstrated that he can run in the top five with the aid of a good start.

Now on a bike known for coming out of the gate strong, Brayton should have little problem getting out front early. Staying there will be a bigger challenge but I don't think he's ever been as confident coming into a season as he is right now. While a win seems unlikely without some major happenings, podium finishes are a realistic goal.

It's going to be a dogfight to claim bragging rights as the 'best of the rest' with the likes of Kevin Windham, Davi Millsaps, Andrew Short, Brett Metcalfe, and possibly even Trey Canard by season's end scrapping to grab this fifth position in the championship. The nod goes to Brayton, however, as he seems perfectly positioned to leverage the tools he's gained over the past two seasons, which should pay big dividends and spur him on to his best championship campaign yet.
