SX: Countdown To A1 - #2 James Stewart
Is James Stewart still the fastest man on two wheels? And even if he is, will that be enough to take him to the '12 Monster Energy Supercross title?

PROGRAMMING NOTE: The 2012 Monster Energy Supercross season opener from Anaheim, CA will air LIVE on SPEED Saturday, January 7th at 10:00pm ET.

With Justin Brayton picked to finish 5th, Ryan Dungey 4th, and Chad Reed 3rd, it comes down to just two. Who gets the nod in our prediction for 2012 Monster Energy Supercross champion and gets relegated to #2?

#2 - James Stewart

Part of the reasoning for ranking 2010 champ Ryan Dungey 'just' fourth was because of his switch to a KTM team that has never experienced success at the highest level of the sport. The same can be said for Stewart, who made the high-profile move to Joe Gibbs Racing.

Since coming into the sport full time in 2008, JGR has seen scattered success, with 2009 serving as a breakthrough season in which the team scored its first -- and to this point only -- Supercross and motocross wins.

Over the past two years, the franchise has experienced tremendous growth in R&D, taking advantage of the NASCAR resources available to them to develop a truly state-of-the-art race bike. While it has not directly translated into on-track success just yet, JGR now has the rider it needs to make it a true contender.

And while JGR looks to have the potential to deliver the goods, it's worth noting that Stewart's talent and feelings about his 2011 performance would probably be more than enough to drive him to win no matter what team he ultimately linked up with.

That said, the new relationship with JGR could become a perfect match. While the world witnessed the first 'off' season of Stewart's career, no one doubts that the multiple-time champion still has the speed to win and potentially dominate. While grumblings of how deserving he remains of the “fastest man on the planet” moniker he was tabbed with many years ago have made their rounds on the message boards, the fact remains that he’s a favorite to win the race and the championship any time he’s on the gate.

At 26 years of age, Stewart is now one of the elder statesmen in the sport, but he’s shown no signs of slowing down. Stewart had to dig deeper than he'd ever done before in '11. That should make him a more mature rider in '12 and one motivated to prove to the world that it was a fluke. He’ll need to channel that energy throughout the season, because it’s going to be a dogfight from Anaheim 1 all the way to Las Vegas.

I do think Stewart will miss out on the title once again in 2012, but it won’t be by much.
