Picking up our week-long 2012 Monster Energy Supercross title pick countdown at #3…
#3 – Chad Reed
Had it not been for the historic campaign by Ryan Villopoto last season, Chad Reed would been named 'Rider of the Year'. Reed came into the season as a privateer, more or less. He had the right pieces -- and definitely the right motivation -- to succeed, and did so almost immediately. The Australian quietly amassed podium after podium, and by the time the season came down to the wire, the first-year team owner/rider was well positioned to walk away with the championship.
From there, he parlayed his indoors success (and hard-earned support from Honda) into an incredible outdoor campaign that looked dominant more often than not.
Reed is back in '12 with more support than ever, and after ending the 2011 season the way he did -- just missing out on a chance to grab both of the sport’s most coveted championships -- he’s likely got an even stronger will to succeed.
Set to turn 30 in March, Reed is at that pivotal age that typically signifies the twilight of any Supercross career. With a seven-year age gap separating him from the youngest of the 'big four', it might be logical to assume that Reed’s opportunity is fast closing, but you could make a strong argument that his Hall of Fame career has been best defined by a the strongest mental game that sport has ever seen.
All too often the former champ has been counted out, be it injury, age, or lack of support. However, Reed has thrived in the face of adversity and achieved his greatest success. I expect nothing less for 2012. There is still a fire inside, and he’ll give it everything he’s got once again this season. It may not be a championship, but it’ll be memorable.
