Can the ageless Chad Reed summon up another championship push in 2013 or will he finally be eclipsed for good by his younger rivals?

PROGRAMMING NOTE: The 2013 Monster Energy Supercross season opener will air LIVE on SPEED on Saturday, January 5th at 9:30 ET.

There is little doubt that the 'Big Four' will once again set the tone in this season’s Monster Energy Supercross championship, but exactly which one of these superstars emerges as the most formidable remains the big question.

Choosing between them is always a difficult task because when it comes to speed, talent, and tenacity, they are very closely matched. Any one of these riders can win on any given night. Knowing that each is likely to win multiple events this season, it will likely again boil down to consistency and minimizing the “bad” races.

Chad Reed was sidelined for months following his frightening Dallas crash last season that left him with the worst injuries of his lengthy career. Reed returned to action at the Monster Energy Cup and demonstrated he’s as fast as ever even if his riding looked a little rough around the edges.

He returned to his home nation and made winning look easy in the Australian national Supercross series. We all know he’s plenty motivated, a driving factor that has been kicked up a few notches ever since he first embarked into foreign territory as an owner/rider. That fact and the resultant success he's enjoyed during the venture have cemented Reed’s status as one of the sport's most influential figures of all time. He’s also never failed to be a title threat in the decade of premier class competition. Knowing that retirement is an impending reality has somehow given Reed even more incentive.

With some racing under his belt, Reed should be in the mix beginning on Saturday night, but in the long term, I think he will ultimately land just off the championship podium, but not by much. I expect the standings to shift throughout the 17-race season and Reed could lead the rankings at some point. Mere points could separate the top four riders -- an even closer margin than the epic 2011 campaign. This is a tough call, but the intangibles ultimately left Reed fourth in this list.
