PROGRAMMING NOTE: Round 7 of the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross Championship from Arlington, TX will air LIVE on SPEED on Saturday, February 16th at 8:30pm ET.
Davi Millsaps' shocking position atop the Monster Energy Supercross points standings isn't merely defying the odds, he's rewriting the rules.
Supercross is an ability-based sport that traditionally sees preordained super talents dominate for stretches that span across seasons. And typically, one untouchable hero will eventually pass the torch to the next Supercross god, who similarly overwhelms the field and dominates week-after-week for a few years until he too relinquishes his throne to the next megastar in waiting.
That trend has been both a blessing and a curse for the sport, as Supercross clearly rewards innate, natural gifts as opposed to pure chance. However, it can also result in some rather predictable racing and championship campaigns.
Many have pointed to modern day racing as a new golden era for Supercross, as four of this rare breed -- Ryan Villopoto, James Stewart, Chad Reed, and Ryan Dungey -- have ascended in a compact timeframe that has forced them to compete with one another while at or near the peak of their powers, with another pair of demigods -- Trey Canard and Justin Barcia -- also capable of doing battle at the front.
This fortuitous fluke of fate has resulted in some epic racing over the past three seasons, even if it hasn't quite lived up to expectations due to a multitude of injuries, rarely allowing all to be completely healthy at the same time.
It was hoped that 2013 might be that long-awaited 'Clash of the Titans,' but instead we've been treated to something even rarer -- something even better.
Supercross 'mortal' Davi Millsaps has done the unthinkable and elevated his game to a level that has matched -- and perhaps even exceeded -- the sport's giants who were once considered unbeatable.
Through six races this season, Millsaps has been not only the most consistent competitor but simply the best rider. He's been even, smart, and blindingly fast.
