The 2012 Monster Energy Supercross title fight is back on.

After seeing the championship slowly transform into a Ryan Villopoto benefit in recent weeks, Red Bull/KTM's Ryan Dungey answered the bell by scoring a vital second victory of the season on Saturday night in Atlanta.

Dungey turned the tables on Villopoto in exactly the manner that was required; the '10 champ finally nailed the sort of start he'd been looking for, escaping in second just behind a remarkable Cole Seely, the West Region Lites regular who was riding in place of the injured Trey Canard.

Meanwhile, Villopoto was forced to claw his way up from behind, running sixth on the opening lap with a number of hungry rivals standing between him and his fifth win of the season.

Well behind them both was third title fighter James Stewart, who limped to another poor start. Stewart opened his race outside the top ten after clashing with Villopoto's Monster Energy Kawasaki teammate in the race's first corner, and faced a big hill to climb right from the beginning.

Despite his stellar start, Dungey looked somewhat vulnerable early, taking a full eight laps to displace super-sub Seely -- all the while Villopoto had a bead on him as he diced up through the field.

The two were finally firmly established in first and second with half of the main event's 20 laps in the books, and Villopoto continued to close in, walking a three second deficit down to right around a second with just a couple laps to go.

Proving that the season's drama didn't exit with the injury of Chad Reed, Villopoto and Dungey brought the crowd to their feet with a nail biting finish. In the end, Dungey held strong while Villopoto came up just short in his bid for a fourth consecutive victory.

Rejuvenated -- both emotionally and in his championship standing -- Dungey said, "I had a great week. After seven weeks on the West Coast, I finally got to my place down in Florida and just had some time to myself. I had a great week of riding; we did some testing and I got some rest.

"I'm really glad to get this win to back up Phoenix. I have to give it up to the whole team. It's been a fun process and hopefully we can continue to build from here. It's a lot of hard work and you go through some ups and downs, but I'm glad we rebounded and got this one on top."
