Reigning Supercross East Region Lites Champion Justin Barcia continued his dominant reign, claiming his second victory in as many tries this season tonight in Atlanta.
The GEICO Honda pilot broke free right from the start and carried on in his typically spectacular style (including one late-race near-miss) and yet somehow simultaneously looked solidly in control all the way to the checkered flag.
Barcia's victory was made that much easier when Red Bull/KTM's Ken Roczen -- potentially Barcia's biggest worry entering the main event -- took himself out of contention for the win as soon as the gates dropped. Well, fractions of a second earlier than that to be accurate.
Roczen inched forward just prior to the gates dropped and found himself hung up in his starting spot as the rest of the field tore off to Turn 1. The German finally freed himself and started his charge from last position, admirably battling his way up to sixth but never having a shot at Barcia after his mistake.
After securing his second consecutive Atlanta victory, the mustachioed Barcia said, "It was most difficult track of the year for sure. It was really scary for me. I was emotional; it was a really tough race for the whole GEICO Honda team. Everyone was on the money tonight and I'm so happy to be up here."
Blake Baggett bounced back from last week's rough outing to finish as the runner-up. Still feeling under the weather and relatively slow in practice (10th), Baggett won his heat race and finished second in the main to get his season back on track.
Barcia's young teammate, Justin Bogle, charged up past Rockstar Energy Suzuki's Blake Wharton and Baggett's Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki teammate, Darryn Durham, to round out the podium after making a push for second himself.
The podium was Bogle's first after last week's high-profile (and expensive) clash with Malcolm Stewart. Stewart, meanwhile, failed to make the main after crashing from 1st in his heat and running into bike problems just prior to the start of the LCQ.
