BATES: Wharton Impressed The Most
While Justin Barcia registered a smart and gritty ride and Dean Wilson took a popular win at home, Erin Bates was most impressed with Blake Wharton's effort in Toronto.

You know, I have to admit, it looked like Justin Barcia settled for second place last weekend in Toronto. Dean Wilson made the pass after tracking the points leader down and Barcia suddenly started to lose ground to his rival. However, I think he played it smart. Barcia is riding injured and it’s not getting any better. It’s not getting any worse, but it’s definitely not getting any better. He’s in a lot of pain so I thought it was an amazing ride.

I was very happy for Dean Wilson. To grow up in Canada and come out and take that victory in front of all these Canadians, including myself, who was also happy to be 'home,' is amazing.

However, what impressed me the most in Toronto was Blake Wharton, who finished third. Blake happens to have a torn labrum in his right shoulder that’s pretty substantial and he needs to have surgery on it. There’s really no other way around it. However, he was going to decide after Toronto’s result whether he would wait until the end of the season to have the surgery. Something tells me that after a third place effort in Canada, as well as his home race in Dallas coming up this weekend, that Blake will hold off until the season concludes.

I was also very impressed with Ryan Sipes -- the big 2-5. You almost couldn’t read the numbers because he was going by so fast. An unfortunate event happened again for him, as he was punted off the track by Wharton. I don’t necessarily think it was a dirty move -- it was an aggressive one -- but I particularly enjoyed the death stare following the race that Sipes gave to his rival. He managed to make his way through the field from last place into fifth place and if you look at the lap times, they were relatively close to those of the leaders despite being in considerable traffic throughout the entire main event on a bike that surely was as good as it could have been after the incident.

It was outstanding again. These guys do this every single weekend and you just never know what’s going to happen. It’s exciting, I love it, and I can’t wait for Dallas.
