Justin Barcia most certainly had to work for it, but in the end the 2011 Supercross Lites East Champion opened his '12 title defense with a victory in Dallas.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Darryn Durham stole the holeshot but immediately had his hands full with Rockstar Energy Suzuki's Blake Wharton, Meanwhile, GEICO Honda ace Barcia found himself in fourth, caught up behind teammate Justin Bogle.

Barcia had it much better than the man widely expected to be his biggest title concern, however, as Durham's teammate, Blake Baggett, was dumped to the dirt attempting to negotiate the start-line chaos.

Durham momentarily lost the lead to Wharton but quickly retook first with a hard pass that left the luckless Wharton on the ground (Wharton also got the short end of things in his heat race, ping-ponged from first to fourth by three riders over a single lap).

Barcia took his time to make sure he could slip past Bogle without too much drama, stealing away the runner-up position on lap 4 of 15 with Red Bull KTM phenom Ken Roczen closing in from fourth.

Despite Barcia's looking presence, Durham put up a spirited fight for first. He defended the spot successful for several laps, even retaking the position after losing it to the champ momentarily.

However, Barcia ultimately made a move stick with six remaining and broke free to take the win. Durham followed him home for a most impressive second-place effort.

"It was really tough," Barcia said. "Everyone is riding so good; I'm very impressed with everyone. It's just about getting good starts… I'm so happy."

Roczen eventually slugged his way past Bogle for third (where he would finish) and Malcom Stewart attempted to do the same just a few short corners later.

However, Stewart came across Bogle's front wheel, the two getting caught together in the process as Bogle's boot was stuck in Stewart's wheel. Once they were finally separated, a furious Bogle slapped his rival on the back of the helmet and seemed to be favoring his hand after the strike.

Stewart carried on to sixth while Bogle retired from the race.

Wharton remounted from his early spill to take fourth while Phillip Nicoletti rounded out the top five.
