While the lion's share of the preseason talk centered around the 'Big Four' and the seemingly inevitable rise of a rookie hotshot to make it a five-horse race at the front, neither Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, James Stewart, Chad Reed, nor Justin Barcia factored into the race for victory in Saturday's Monster Energy Supercross Championship season opener.

But the battle for the checkered flag in Anaheim was thrilling nonetheless, with Rockstar Suzuki's Davi Millsaps stealing a dramatic last-lap victory away from Team Honda Muscle Milk's returning Trey Canard, who was sidelined for almost a full year leading up to A1 after his horrific, back-breaking crash of 2012.

While the pre-race favorites all dealt with issues during the main, the race was owned at the front by Millsaps and Canard throughout. The two powered into a showdown for the win from the race's very first lap, immediately gapping the four former champs and later forcing rookie Barcia into a late-race mistake while he was running just off the scrap for first in third.

Millsaps controlled the pace aboard his Rockstar Energy Suzuki for the bulk of the race but was overhauled by Canard with just four laps remaining. However, Millsaps summoned up a bit of last-lap magic, pulling alongside his rival just a handful of corners from the stripe. The two then tangled with Millsaps coming away from the clash with the advantage. He held strong in first from there to soar to his first win in some 36 races.

Asked what made the difference tonight, the oft-overlook '12 runner-up said, "It was a great offseason -- a great program that I had -- dedication, dedication. And joining the Rockstar Energy racing team -- they believed in me and stood behind me… I can't thank enough people."

Canard wasn't overly disappointed to get out-dueled for victory, quickly congratulating the winner and beaming after finishing second.

"I'm just speechless," he explained. "I'm completely thankful to be here tonight. I look back a year ago and just can't imagine this."
