PROGRAMMING NOTE: Round 2 of the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross Championship from Phoenix, AZ will air LIVE on SPEED on Saturday, January 12th at 9:30 ET.

The 2013 Monster Energy Supercross opener was just about the perfect way to start this highly anticipated season. While virtually none of the preseason title favorites had a major presence in the main event, the upset victory by Davi Millsaps set the tone for what should prove to be a very exciting championship battle.

1. Davi Millsaps (Preseason Rank: 7 / +6)

You have to give Millsaps the credit that is due for winning the opener. There isn’t a more important race in Monster Energy Supercross than Anaheim 1 and Millsaps was simply the most consistent the entire night. This wasn’t a fluke performance, and might even be a glimpse of what could be a breakthrough season for the veteran.

2. Trey Canard (Preseason Rank: 6 / +4)

Trey came into Anaheim a bit under the radar. It’s hard to say that when you’re talking about a multi-time race winner, but Canard hasn’t really competed since his rookie season, forced to battle back from some significant injuries during that span. Seriously lacking in track time, you couldn’t expect Canard to return at that same level. However, he did and now he looks ready to take everyone head on.

3. Ryan Dungey (Preseason Rank: 2 / -1)

Dungey had one of the quietest -- and maybe most fortunate -- podium efforts of his career last Saturday night. He was there in the hunt, but never did much other than cling onto the pace. He then tipped over and seemingly lost his shot at a spot on the box only to have Justin Barcia gift it back to him. Mr. Consistency did what he does best and he’s already put himself in position to take control of the early title fight.

4. Chad Reed (Preseason Rank: 4 / No Change)

Steady Reedy was a more appropriate description for the veteran’s performance in Anaheim. He’s still on the road to recovery despite the amount of time off and he will likely need to race his way into the form we’re used to seeing. He wasn’t flashy by any means, but he was solid, and that's what it takes to be in the championship hunt. Keep an eye on Reed's progress from week-to-week.

5. Ryan Villopoto (Preseason Rank: 1 / -4)

Not too much of a fall for the champ despite his Anaheim nightmare. I’ve never seen anything quite like that from Villopoto, but we should all just chalk it up to one bad night in the end. He’s fortunate to come out of Anaheim with no serious injuries and should be expected to rebound very nicely this weekend in Phoenix. He may be 16th in points, but he’s not in any trouble yet.
