Did Ryan Villopoto's third victory of the season springboard him back to the top of SPEED.com's Supercross Power Rankings?

PROGRAMMING NOTE: Round 8 of the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross Championship from Atlanta, GA will air LIVE on SPEED on Saturday, February 23rd at 7:30pm ET.

You can make a strong argument that Ryan Villopoto has been the fastest rider this season in Monster Energy Supercross -- speed that has enabled him to secure a series-leading three wins. However, he’s also had his share of tough outings, allowing Davi Millsaps to claim control the championship race and the power rankings for virtually the entire season. After last weekend’s race in Texas things are tightening up a little bit as we head into Atlanta, and there has been some shifting all around the rankings this week.

1. Davi Millsaps (Last Week: 1 / No Change)

The formula for success in any form of racing is simple: stay out of trouble, be consistent, and win if you can. Millsaps is nailing that equation on a weekly basis and it’s why he’s emerged as the man to beat. Six podiums in seven races are all the more impressive when you consider that he's taking on the most talented field in the history of the sport. Davi is just cruising right now.

2. Ryan Dungey (Last Week: 2 / No Change)

Mr. Consistency 2.0 is in full effect as Dungey has now logged four consecutive podium finishes to bring his season total to five. If not for some bad luck, Dungey would be breathing down Millsaps’ neck. The issue now is that the former champ needs to stop giving up points if he’s going to keep this title fight close. Plus, an old friend is inching in on second pretty quickly…

3. Ryan Villopoto (Last Week: 4 / +1)

A big win in Big D was exactly what the champ needed in order to get things headed back in the right direction. Like Dungey, if not for an uncharacteristically high number of miscues for RV this season, he’d likely leading the championship or very close to it. The disaster of A1 is long behind him and now it’s all about momentum. This point in the season is traditionally where Villopoto is at his best, so the two riders ahead of him better be aware.

4. Trey Canard (Last Week: 3 / -1)

Trey started the year off on fire, but hasn’t really been a major presence since finishing fourth in Oakland. I thought we would have seen a win by him at this point, but he hasn’t been getting the starts he needs to compete up front. He’s slowly losing touch with the lead trio in the standings and needs to turn things around soon.

5. Chad Reed (Last Week: 6 / +1)

You can almost feel how close Reed is to being at his best. In San Diego, he looked ready to win. Last week, he showed he’s ready to battle. The pieces are there, but just haven’t come together completely or consistently. I could see the frustration from Reed after dropping from second to fourth in Dallas, and that just means he’s going to step it up even more this weekend. He’s a guy to keep an eye on because a rider with his success doesn’t take not winning lightly.
