PROGRAMMING NOTE: Round 3 of the Eastern Regional 250SX Class Championship from St. Louis, MO will air on SPEED on Sunday, March 3rd at 2:30pm ET.
Prior to the season, 2013 seemed to be shaping up as a banner year for James Stewart with a new team, new bike, and renewed motivation. However, since tearing his ACL in Anaheim before the season's first drop of the gates, it’s been an uphill battle. The former champ broke through to win last weekend in Atlanta and gain some much needed momentum, but season-long title leader Davi Millsaps still stands above the rest.
1. Davi Millsaps (Last Week: 1 / No Change)
At this point it seems as though Millsaps can do no wrong. He got one of his worst starts of the season in Atlanta but still managed to slash his way to a podium finish. Make that seven podiums in eight races for Millsaps who just keeps barreling toward a first-career title.
2. Ryan Villopoto (Last Week: 3 / +1)
Villopoto was the only rider within any sort of proximity to Stewart in Atlanta and has now moved into second in the championship. The champ has climbed from fourth to second in the rankings thanks to two really strong weeks. He’s 22 back of Millsaps, but he has the ability to win every night.
3. Ryan Dungey (Last Week: 2 / -1)
After four consecutive podium finishes, Dungey was simply off his game in Atlanta. He wasn’t a factor in his heat race or main event and spent the majority of the evening battling through the field. Given that he started outside the top 10, sixth place isn’t a terrible result, but it’s cost him very valuable points and a spot in both the standings and these power rankings.
4. Trey Canard (Last Week: 4 / No Change)
Trey wasn’t much of a factor in Atlanta and still appears to be looking for the speed that made him a title contender earlier this season. He hasn’t been on the podium since Anaheim 2 and has posted 4th – 7th – 8th – 7th – 5th results since. However, because most of the field is finding it hard to generate consistency as well, he’s still in control of fourth place in the championship.
5. Justin Barcia (Last Week: 6 / +1)
Barcia is starting to turn things on again and is recovering nicely from the pair of DNFs that cost him a shot at challenging for the title this season. The rookie just missed out on the podium in Atlanta and is showing signs that he’s ready to become a regular threat for the podium again. While he’s sixth in the championship, he’s closing his gap to Chad Reed in fifth.
