PROGRAMMING NOTE: Round 11 of the Monster Energy Supercross Championship from Indianapolis, IN will air LIVE on SPEED on Saturday, March 16th at 8:30pm ET.

Traditionally, Daytona is known for providing a unique twist in the middle of the Monster Energy Supercross season thanks to its motocross-like qualities. There is no other track on the tour like Daytona and it challenges the riders in a way that can shake up the standings.

Last weekend, Daytona lived up to those expectations as another win by Ryan Villopoto not only solidified his position atop the Power Rankings, but also vaulted him into the championship lead.

1. Ryan Villopoto (Last Week: 1 / No Change)

The Champ is hitting his stride, which can only mean bad things for his rivals. The fact that he made a pretty big mistake early on at Daytona and yet still managed to run away with the victory speaks volumes to how well he and his bike are dialed in. Now in control of the title fight, Villopoto is back in a familiar position and you know he’s focused on maintaining the advantage from here on out. His Terminator-themed intro is becoming more appropriate by the week.

2. Ryan Dungey (Last Week: 3 / +1)

Despite not having a flashy night or the best of starts, Dungey was impressive in Daytona. It’s well known that fitness is Dungey’s greatest asset when it comes to grueling races and Daytona was brutal. However, the Red Bull KTM pilot simply kept charging and even closed the gap to Villopoto somewhat toward the end of the Main Event. It was exactly the kind of ride Dungey needed to give him some momentum, especially since his biggest rival is now the championship leader.

3. Davi Millsaps (Last Week: 2 / -1)

Millsaps is battling through some injuries and it's unfortunate to see his incredible start to the year start to lose steam. We’ve all enjoyed the emergence of the underdog this season because we’ve known for many years that he has what it takes to be at the top of the sport. Here’s hoping a little time off the bike and the loss of the points leads results in a rejuvenation of his hard-charging ways. This championship is far from being over.

4. Chad Reed (Last Week: 4 / No Change)

If it wasn’t for a couple bad starts, Reed very well could have been right there with Villopoto in Daytona. To make matters worse, Reed crashed in both his heat race and the Main Event, forcing him to work even harder to recover from the bad starts. Despite that, he battled back through the field like a man possessed. Reed’s starting to feel it and is riding like the rider we’ve become accustomed to watching for so many years. A win might not be too far off.

5. Justin Barcia (Last Week: 5 / No Change)

Barcia looked great at Daytona, but his inexperience in the 450SX Class started to show as the long Main Event wore on. You could see the roughness of the track start to wear the rookie out a little bit and he ultimately gave way to Dungey for second. However, to land on the podium in his first Daytona race on a 450 is impressive and I’d bet that experience will work to his advantage as the season moves forward.
