PROGRAMMING NOTE: Round 7 of the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross Championship from Arlington, TX will air LIVE on SPEED on Saturday, February 16th at 8:30pm ET.
If anyone thought that his first round win to kick off the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross season was a fluke, Davi Millsaps showed last Saturday in San Diego that he is the current championship leader for a reason with a wire-to-wire victory. As Millsaps continues to pull away in the standings, his fellow contenders are left to battle amongst themselves in hopes of keeping their hopes of winning the title alive.
1. Davi Millsaps (Last Week: 1 / No Change)
One week after returning to the top of the rankings, Millsaps put a stamp on his position with arguably the most impressive performance of the season. He’s been consistent, but now he looks ready to take that next step and truly be in the hunt for the win each week. The momentum is fully in Millsaps favor right now.
2. Ryan Dungey (Last Week: 3 / +1)
Dungey followed up his first win of the season with another podium result. He’s managed to assert himself behind Millsaps in the championship and is no doubt eager to chip away at the points lead while also giving himself some more breathing room from the riders behind him. It looks like Dungey is starting to hit his stride when it comes to consistency.
3. Trey Canard (Last Week: 2 / -1)
Canard has had a couple tough outings the last two weeks. After a bad start in San Diego, he was never really able to move forward the way we’ve been accustomed to seeing this season. He’s lost more ground than he would have liked in the championship and now has to deal with Ryan Villopoto for the third spot. Trey has had success in Dallas before, so maybe this weekend will be the turnaround he needs right now.
4. Ryan Villopoto (Last Week: 4 / No Change)
Little mistakes have kept Villopoto from being in the thick of the title hunt. We know he has the speed, as evidenced by his back-to-back wins at the third and fourth stops, but he’s followed up those victories with crashes over consecutive weeks. It’s those sorts of hiccups that Villopoto will surely look to correct so he can once again swing the momentum going in his favor and return to the top of these rankings.
5. Justin Barcia (Last Week: 6 / +1)
The back-to-back DNFs by Barcia could have ruined the rookie’s season, but he’s bounced back strong with a pair of podium finishes, highlighted by an impressive runner-up effort last weekend. He’s getting hot at a good time and is climbing his way back through the standings.
