PROGRAMMING NOTE: The Monster Energy Supercross Championship from Las Vegas will air LIVE on SPEED Saturday, May 5 at 10:00pm ET. #SXonSPEED
The day has come to bring the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross season to a close. Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium will host the world’s best riders for one final showdown. The event has been sold out for months and while there aren’t any championships to be decided tonight, there are still plenty of reasons to watch the race intently.
First and foremost, the Vegas track is arguably the most exciting layout of the season. The starting gate sits outside the stadium floor, which sets the stage for 20 bikes rushing into Sam Boyd at full speed. There really isn’t anything like it and even as the night wears on it never gets old to see the true speed of a Supercross bike.
The biggest storyline in the premier class is whether Davi Millsaps can end the season with a win. I’ve talked about Millsaps’ impressive rise over the second half of the season with regularity, but he always seems to come up a little bit short of taking the checkered flag. This was particularly evident last weekend in Salt Lake City where he led the opening 18 laps of the main event, only to get caught up in traffic and lose the lead (and he race) to Ryan Dungey.
The racing gods reward consistency and Millsaps has done everything you could ask from a rider this season. If he’s able to get out of the gates near the front of the field, don't be surprised if he shows the motivation and drive to carry himself to the lead and the win. In what has been a difficult season for Joe Gibbs Racing, Millsaps has been a bright spot, rewarding the team’s hard work this year.
The regional Lites titles have been wrapped up by the GEICO Honda duo of Justin Barcia (East) and Eli Tomac (West). As a result, the final main events for each region will be somewhat anticlimactic. Actually, the respective main events may serve more of a tune-up for the Lites Shootout at the end of the evening.
