SX: The Burning Q - Biggest Surprise?
While a number of Supercross' biggest stars have been sidelined due to injury, another group has stepped forward to fill the void.

Meanwhile, Brayton entered the year facing more pressure than he’s ever encountered before. As the newest face at Factory Honda, arguably the most iconic team in Supercross history, Brayton needed to excel. When Canard went down to injury on two separate occasions this season, that requirement only expanded, and while Brayton has stumbled several times this season, he’s maintained a level head and is now arguably the hottest rider in the division and my pick for the biggest surprise of the championship.
Things started of exceptionally well for the third-year 450 rider, recording a fourth-place finish in Anaheim. However, a week later Brayton finished 14th and failed to qualify in LA the following week. He patiently worked to find a groove, but suffered what could have been a disastrous setback in San Diego when a crash left him with an leg.
Despite the incredible pain and excessive swelling, the Iowan refused to sit idle. He’d forego riding during the week, allowing time to heal, and would show up at the races simply looking to do his best. In the absence of weekly training, Brayton still recorded solid results, building confidence along the way. His first podium of the season came in St. Louis and was a much-needed shot in the arm; Brayton was proven correct in his assessment that there can be as much value in rest as there is in training.
Well rested and healing up well, Brayton was one of the many riders who were a victim of the mud in Daytona, but rather than let that effort derail what was becoming a strong second half, he bounced back with his best ride of the year in Indianapolis, leading 10 laps and holding off Villopoto for much of the main event before settling for second. He duplicated that result one week ago.
Brayton's success in the face of adversity this season is a true testament to his both his work ethic and intelligent approach, making Honda appear wise to sign him in the first place. He’s sat as high as fourth in the championship standings and has fallen as far as 13th. Now, sixth and surging at the right time, Brayton is in line for the best performance of his career.
