Ryan Villopoto has wrapped up his second consecutive Monster Energy Supercross title and done so earlier than anyone ever before. So now what? Could the door be open for a new name to rise above the rest and stand atop the podium before the season runs out?

With four races remaining and the deed already done, you have to imagine Villopoto's drive will be somewhat diminished. He’s never been the type of rider to simply go out and ride around, and I do think there is a strong likelihood of him sweeping through the final month of competition. However, should he be pressured or find himself behind at any point over the final 80 laps of competition, he may not feel there is a need to risk putting himself in any sort of danger with the outdoor season approaching -- particularly considering the fates of his many top-tier counterparts this Supercross season.

And who are the most likely candidates to steal a win before the year is out?

Over the second half of the season, Davi Millsaps and Justin Brayton have emerged as consistent frontrunners. The chance to challenge Villopoto at the front of the field has certainly upped their pace, and their stellar results have boosted in their confidence.

Villopoto’s teammate, Jake Weimer, has been a podium threat throughout the 2012 season, proving to be 'on' in some weeks and 'off' on others. However, he’s shown flashes that he's got what it takes to win. And of the three mentioned, Weimer is the only one to really mix it up at the front of the field with the likes of Villopoto, Chad Reed, James Stewart, and Ryan Dungey this season.

Outside of Villopoto, Millsaps has been the strongest rider in the premier class throughout the second half of the season. Moreover, he’s the only one of this trio who is a proven winner at the top level of the sport. It’s been a while (San Diego in 2010), but nevertheless, he knows how it's done. Starts have been the key to success, but Millsaps is capable of making a run through the field if need be.
