PROGRAMMING NOTE: The Seattle round of the Monster Energy Supercross Championship will air on SPEED Saturday, April 21 at 10:30pm ET. #SXonSPEED
Amidst all the championship talk for both Ryan Villopoto and Justin Barcia and their respective titles, an exceptional battle set to resume this weekend in the Supercross Lites West Region Championship has almost been forgotten.
It’s been two months since we’ve seen Dean Wilson, Eli Tomac, and the rest of the boys out West, but for the next three weeks they will take center stage as they fight for the lone remaining championship to be decided in Monster Energy Supercross for 2012.
Last time out Tomac’s near one-race advantage over Wilson was erased by the brutal whoops at San Diego. While Tomac was forced to record a DNF, Wilson took control out front, winning his second race of the season and setting the tone for a captivating run to the finish.
During the break in action Wilson was able to commit all of his focus on winning his first Supercross title while Tomac was forced to recover from a minor fracture in his elbow. Ultimately, with nine weeks of downtime, both riders will enter Seattle ready to go.
It’s a wide open title fight between these two. Wilson’s advantage is only two points, which is the difference of just a single position essentially. The duo has been the class of the field throughout the season, with Tomac coming on strong the third week of the championship and clicking off a three-race win streak. As Tomac rose to the occasion, Wilson stumbled somewhat, failing to make the podium during two of those three races.
What went down in San Diego was a shocker in some ways and not in others -- reminding us all yet again just how inherently unpredictable the sport is. That twist revitalized the championship and has given the final weeks on the slate a much-needed shot of adrenaline with Villopoto already standing as the premier class champion.
