PROGRAMMING NOTE: Round 4 of the Monster Energy Supercross Lites West Championship from Oakland, CA will air on SPEED Sunday, January 29 at 5:00pm ET. #SXonSPEED
With three winners in as many races to start the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross season, it’s almost impossible to tab a rider as the early title favorite.
Defending champ Ryan Villopoto set the tone for a potentially dominant season with a blistering effort at the opening round in Anaheim, but two weeks later, he’s found himself forced to claw his way back up the order from dead last each of the past two races. It's been brutally tough just to salvage a second-placed position in the championship hunt.
'10 king Ryan Dungey made history in Anaheim when he gave KTM its first premier class podium, then promptly topped that a week later by securing the brand’s first win. He now sits atop the points for the second week in a row -- this time with sole ownership of the position -- and is the only rider to be on the podium through each round.
Veteran star Chad Reed was solid out of the box in Anaheim, but mysteriously wasn’t much of a factor in Phoenix one week later. However, just as some started to question whether or not he still had what it takes to contend for the crown, the Aussie bounced back this past Saturday night with a convincing victory at Dodger Stadium to jump right into the thick of the early title fight.
James Stewart has simply been a mystery. He has one podium effort in three main events -- less than any of his key rivals -- and has been on the ground in each of those races. However, despite not registering any stirring results to this point, he’s still been right there at the front of the field and remains undefeated in heat races for the 2012 season. Despite his struggles, he sits tied for fourth in points (albeit an early 19 down on Dungey.)
