SX: The Holeshot - Daytona
Daytona drama helped to inject a bit of new life into an injury-hit 2012 Monster Energy Supercross campaign.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: Round 11 of the Monster Energy Supercross Championship from Indianapolis, IN will air LIVE on SPEED Saturday, March 17 at 8:30pm ET. #SXonSPEED

The big news going in and coming out of Daytona was the loss of Ryan Dungey from the championship fight. With two victories in his belt, Dungey was the closest challenger to defending champ Ryan Villopoto. But now he's just the latest casualty in what has become a season defined more by injury than by results. First it was Trey Canard, then Chad Reed, and now Dungey.

While unfortunate it’s the harsh nature of our sport. We move on and continue to watch world-class talent on display, and even with the loss of three potential winners, there is still an enormous amount of skill fighting for position each weekend.

Case in point: last Saturday night in Daytona. Mother Nature did her best to become the headline but was ultimately upstaged by stellar performances from a handful of riders. Much credit must go out to James Stewart and Justin Barcia for their race-winning efforts. Riding in the rain anywhere is hard enough; winning in the rain at Daytona is another story altogether.

I’ve said for the last couple weeks that Stewart and Joe Gibbs Racing have quietly turned things around, and he showed in a not-so-quiet manner it on Saturday. Stewart came into Daytona hungry considering the contrast in how well he had been riding and his actual results. He essentially took the bull by the horns on a track at which he excels and laid it down in the toughest conditions we’ve seen in a few years.

The victory was huge in many respects, possibly providing Stewart with the boost in confidence he needs to track down Ryan Villopoto in the championship race, while also lending him some much-needed momentum as we head back indoors for the next few weeks.

Making the evening even more special for JGR, Davi Millsaps followed his teammate across the line in second, giving the team its first 1-2 finish ever. Never before has JGR had both of its riders on the podium, and to do it at a track like Daytona, where the entire organization has enjoyed so much past success, had to be the icing on the cake.

Considering the weather and his heat race performances, many people thought it was going to be Kevin Windham’s night. It’s no secret that K-Dub has an affinity for tough conditions and 2008 flashbacks were racing through everyone's minds. However, the conditions proved simply too treacherous to allow him push as hard as he needed to in order to challenge both Stewart and Millsaps, but he still managed to notch up his first podium effort of the season, which be the kick start he needs to start picking up the pace over the second half of the year.
