SX: The Holeshot - Indy
This is not the Monster Energy Supercross season we expected; Brandon Short reflects on how 'the year of parity' has become an injury-strewn, one-sided affair.

On the flip side, Blake Wharton couldn’t be feeling more confident in his decision to join the Rockstar Suzuki effort this season. The team has turned the corner in terms of performance this season, and I think Wharton’s influence likely has something to do with that. He was dialed in last weekend and you could argue that there was a chance he could have caught Roczen even if the crash hadn’t happened. The bottom line is that this was a long overdue victory for Wharton who has been winless since taking an upset maiden victory in 2009. He needed it, and his team needed it.
The other two major storylines coming out of Indy was what may have been the first staggered restart in Supercross history and Justin Barcia’s first non-win of the 2012 season.
There was utter confusion from nearly everyone as they witnessed the staggered restart unfold. By rule, riders line up fender-to-fender in the event of a restart once a race reaches a specific lap count. Somehow, in nearly 40 years of competition, this has conceivably never happened before, and while it didn't seem all that strange to me, it ended up being a pretty cool moment for nearly everyone in attendance.
Ironically, had it not been for the restart, Barcia may not have had the opportunity to salvage a podium effort. For the first time this season, Barcia did not get a good start and he suffered the consequences. After crossing the line in ninth on the opening lap, Barcia had to work his way through the field on a track that was not only difficult to pass on, but tough to attack due to its slippery nature.
By the time the red flag flew, signifying the need for the restart, Barcia had only moved up a handful of positions. However, he took full advantage of the opportunity to essentially start over and was extremely aggressive in the lap following the staggered start. As a result, he fought his way into third and retains full control of the championship.
This weekend Supercross makes its lone trip to the Great White North of Canada with its annual stop from Toronto and the iconic Rogers Centre. The venue has been the site of some memorable moments in the past. Find out how it all plays out this time around LIVE on SPEED.
