Three different winners in three races. Talk about parity.

You couldn’t ask for a much more compelling way to start the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross season. The hype coming in was based on the fact that four former champions would be lining up on the gate and through the first three weeks, three of those four have stood atop the box. What’s even more mind-boggling is the only one of them without a win thus far is no other than James Stewart.

Chad Reed brought his A-game into Dodger Stadium and looked pretty much flawless all night long. He provided strong evidence that his Phoenix fifth-place was a fluke and his little dance prepping for the main event is going viral. That just underlined how dialed in Reed was on Saturday; he was having fun and it’s been widely acknowledged that riders perform at their best when they’re enjoying themselves.

With his runner-up effort, Ryan Dungey is well on his way to assuming Reed’s long-held role as Mr. Consistency. The new KTM ace is the only rider in the premier class to finish on the podium in all three rounds and that sort of week-in and week-out performance has pushed Dungey to the top of the points chase. Even this early the Dungey/KTM relationship has to be considered a successful pairing; they are already exceeding the expectations of a lot of people.

While Stewart finally managed to get on the box in LA, he still carries an undesirable streak into Round 4… In each of the three main events, Stewart’s bike has hit the ground. More than anything else, this has been the cause to his slow start. Sure, a couple mid-pack starts haven't helped, but he’s more than capable of moving up through the field quickly. On Saturday, he got the start he needed and looked like a lock to at least run second to Reed, but misfortune struck again. It's hard to believe that Stewart has yet to even challenge for a win this season, but the podium result was a step in the right direction. Slow and steady is a good way to go for the JGR team.
