It seems impossible, but the '12 Monster Energy Supercross title fight seems capable of eclipsing last year's 'best ever' season in terms of excitement and unpredictability.

Parity is absolutely dominating the headlines concerning the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross Series. Just one month into the season, we’re looking at an even more epic championship than last year's, which is widely considered the greatest in the sport's history.

The preseason hype surrounded the fact that the past four champions were going to line up on the gate to go to war for 17 weeks. And for the first time in 36 years, the season has opened with four different winners as each of these four title hopefuls has claimed a victory (the first time it's ever been four champions to claim the first four wins. In fact, only one other time have that many title winners even captured a win in a single season, way back in 1985).

Not only are Ryan Dungey, Chad Reed, Ryan Villopoto and James Stewart trading haymakers on track, they are doing serious damage to the record books.

Not one of them has truly earned the status of championship favorite. Who knows where this season will go from here?

If you had to break it down and analyze it all, I’d say that defending champion Villopoto has shown the most potential to step forward. Besides his dominant season opener, he’s also charged up from the back to the front twice already this season, and he’s posted the single fastest lap in every main event.
