Once again, Supercross racing demonstrates just how unpredictable it really is. Heading into the second round this past weekend in Phoenix the prevailing sentiment was that reigning champion Ryan Villopoto was nearly untouchable coming off his dominant effort at the opening round.
One week later, Villopoto is locked into a tie atop the standings with none other than familiar rival Ryan Dungey.
Much like Villopoto in Anaheim, the other Ryan cleaned house in Phoenix (which also happened to be the site of his first premier-class win in 2010). Dungey grabbed the holeshot and promptly checked out, while the rest of his closest competitors encountered their own separate misfortunes.
Villopoto was in danger of suffering a disastrous night, falling on the first lap and crossing the line in dead last. However, in true Villopoto fashion, he charged -- hard -- and somehow, someway battle his way onto the podium.
On the flip side, James Stewart seemed primed for a healthy rebound from his rough opening round, but instead, found himself on the ground in the exact same spot as Villopoto. He did well to recover, but has yet to break into the top five after two rounds. Now he's already trailing by 17 points, chasing two riders who look more than ready to keep up this pace all season. Less than a month into the season, it’s go time for Stewart,
As for Chad Reed, he was oddly never a major factor. He, along with Stewart, suffered from a bad start, but his expected march up the order through the field sort of stalled out while battling with Andrew Short and Trey Canard. His fifth-place finish was a solid effort, but it just wasn’t the Reed we’re used to seeing and solid probably won't cut it for those with title aspirations in 2012.
