Another underdog victory cemented the fact that this season's championship race will be unlike any we've ever seen.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: Round 7 of the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross Championship from Arlington, TX will air LIVE on SPEED on Saturday, February 16th at 8:30pm ET.

Prior to San Diego, the majority of Supercross fans -- and possibly people within the racing industry -- were still in search of proof that Davi Millsaps is for real. After what he did last Saturday night, I’d say virtually everyone is now a believer and it's safe to say that Millsaps, who has never been in this position since moving into the 450SX class, is setting the benchmark for riding this season.

The wire-to-wire performance that resulted in Millsaps’ second San Diego win was without a doubt his most impressive ride of the season. Sure, Anaheim 1 was a thriller, but in San Diego Millsaps, not only held off Chad Reed, the proverbial king of that stadium, but also withstood the pressure of Justin Barcia while navigating his way through lappers.

In a season that has been waiting for a rider to make a clear statement that he will be the man to beat this season, Millsaps let his riding do the talking and effectively demonstrated that he’s the championship leader for a reason. In six races he’s finished off the podium just once, and that season-worst result was fourth place. It’s one of the most impressive starts to a season we’ve ever seen from a rider that no one expected to have a shot at success.

What Millsaps is doing is nothing short of incredible and the fact that he’s doing it on a privateer bike only adds to the amazement. However, what is perhaps the most intriguing part of the season thus far is simply how much the level of competition has risen collectively. Sure, the “Big Four” of Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, Reed, and James Stewart are expected to set the tone, while many others would also throw Barcia and Trey Canard into the mix as well. However, Millsaps is leading the way for the “other guys” who have all made significant strides in their own right.

Riders like Andrew Short, Justin Brayton, and even Matt Goerke have performed well this season, showing no intimidation for their highly-regarded counterparts. San Diego might have been the best display of how much closer everyone is when Brayton held off the likes of Dungey, Villopoto, Stewart, and Reed for the majority of the main event.
