PROGRAMMING NOTE: Round 3 of the 2013 Monster Energy Western Regional 250SX Class Championship from Anaheim will air on SPEED on Sunday, January 20th at 1:00pm ET.
Kevin Windham, who displayed rare longevity and prolonged competitiveness in a sport that typically retires its heroes in their mid-twenties, announced his retirement tonight at the age of 34. The GEICO Honda star walks away from Supercross/Motocross racing as arguably the most beloved rider on the circuit.
Although he never quite managed to secure a premier class title, Windham was named AMA Rookie of the Year in 1994, claimed two Supercross Lites titles ('96 and '97), was a member of the USA's 2005 Motocross of Nations Team, and finished as the Supercross and Motorcross runner-up a remarkable eight times.
The decorated Windham earned 18 victories and 75 podiums during his illustrious premier class Supercross career. In addition, he notched up 12 wins and 18 podiums during his double title-winning stint on the undercard, and recorded 16 career victories on the Outdoor circuit.
However, as impressive as the numbers are, Windham's fearless determination and fan-friendly nature will be remembered every bit as much as his speed and endurance.
