VIDEO: AMA SBK - Revisiting ‘The Race’
A look back at perhaps the greatest race in AMA Pro Superbike history...

The last time the AMA Pro Superbike Championship did battle at New Jersey Motorsports Park, the result was perhaps the greatest race in the series' thirty-some year history.

The stakes couldn't have been higher, the racing couldn't have been tighter or more intense, and the ending -- both to the contest and the championship -- was very much in doubt right up until season's final few corners.

Recognized as an instant classic as soon as the checkered flag flew, the race's stature has not faded with time.

Relive that epic clash with the original race report below and video highlights above:

Young Wins Epic Race, Hayes Wins Epic Season

The 2011 AMA Pro Superbike Championship wasn't decided until the final lap of arguably the greatest and most dramatic tilt in series history on Sunday at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

Despite coming into the day with an 11-point advantage, Josh Hayes was actually sitting second in the championship until halfway through the season's very last circulation when a flurry of maneuvers fell in his favor and he powered forward to narrowly claim the '11 title over rival Blake Young.

While an anticlimactic finale seemed likely following Saturday's contest, in which Hayes won going away and Young struggled mightily providing the Mississippian with a seemingly easy target of just third or better for Sunday, the race proved anything but.

Eight riders slugged it out at the front with unforgiving passes the order of the day, each man clearly out for themselves in their final bid for victory this season.

Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki ace Young dug down deep to find the pace to fight for the win, and hit the front on lap 13 of 23. Numerous riders attempted to steal the position away from the aggressive star, but each time they were swatted back down by a bold #79 counterattack.

A line of potential spoilers made things as unpredictable and tense as possible throughout the affair. Cycle World Attack Performance Kawasaki's Steve Rapp surged up to third early on the #15 ZX-10R before later crashing out of the lead pack. Foremost Insurance Pegram Racing's Larry Pegram guided his BMW into the mix before a near highside sent him off track. And Young's teammate, Tommy Hayden, crashed out of the lead moments after attempting to outbrake Young into Turn 1 on lap 18.

The Jordan Suzuki duo of Ben Bostrom and Roger Hayden were the key members of the supporting cast on this day, however. Bostrom regularly mixed up the order with unexpected, Simoncelli-esque maneuvers that forced riders off their line and created additional opportunities for those in close quarters.
