Today was the first raceday for the Parts Canada Superbike Championship round from Mosport. I was scheduled to race in the Pro Sportbike class as well as the Honda CBR125R Cup.
As I explained yesterday, we didn't get to practice at all on Friday due to the weather, and I lost a lot of valuable track time. So I got right to work this morning in the Pro Sportbike practice and my lap time was the equal of the fastest time I did on Thursday. That wasn't great; I was hoping to make some pretty big improvements.
I made some changes to the rear suspension of the motorcycle along with some gearing changes, and went back out a couple hours later in the Superbike session. The track had warmed up a little bit and my confidence had increased because the top riders told me the track was in pretty good shape -- I was a little worried because it seemed a little bit green with the rain washing away the rubber. As a result, I dropped my lap times by nearly two seconds, getting down to a 1:28.8. After that I was pretty excited about the race.
Unfortunately, I got a bad start. The ZX-6R is actually pretty easy to launch but I just made a mental mistake off the line. We got going and I had a couple riders ahead of me who I was quicker than in practice, and I worked past them and started to check out. The guys up front were running about a second a lap faster, however, and I wasn't able to make up any ground on them.
I made a huge mistake coming out of Turn 2, which is a very fast off-camber lefthander; I ran it off into the grass down by the Airfence, but I was able to save it and get it back on track. However, the two people I had passed went back by me by that point. With six laps to go I reeled them in and put them behind me again and was able to finish up the race in 14th out of 18 starters.
